May Microsoft Patches Stable But Windows 7 NIC Problems Persist

If you have postponed the installation of the May Microsoft Office patches, then now is the right time that you should get them installed. Just understand that there still are known and unresolved issues with Windows 7 updates breaking network cards. However, at least the truly bad bugs, which were introduced earlier this month by the security patches, have been fixed.

Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 Patching Threat

Do you remember when Windows 7 was relatively stable? Fine! Stable is a relative word, but it is very unlikely to apply to any Windows version. But, if you understand what I mean, then you know that Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 have faced months of issues in general regarding networking. However, the problem of this month was different from the bugs causing issues in the last two months. Microsoft stated that this problem arises in the May Windows 7 Monthly Rollup document- KB 4103718.

Symptoms of the problem

There is a problem with Windows and a 3rd party software which is linked to a missing file. Due to this problem, after the user applies this update, the network interface controller will not work.

Workaround

  1. In order to find the network device, go to Run and launch devmgmt.msc. This might show up under “Other Devices.”
  2. In order to rediscover the NIC automatically and install the drivers, go to the Action menu. Select Scan for Hardware Changes. Other than this, the user can also install the drivers for the network device just by going to the device and right-clicking. Select Update from the drop-down menu. After that, click on either automatically search for updated driver program or browse the computer for driver software.

Create a full system image back up

Before installing the previous month’s patches, it is essential to make a full system image backup. There are chances that the Win7 patches, even the best of the best patches will hose the computer. Hence, it is better to have a backup which the user can reinstall even if their computer system does not boot.

Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

Microsoft has been blocking updates to Windows 7 as well as Windows 8.1 on recent systems. Therefore, if your system has Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 which is less than a year old, then you will have to apply some methods to ensure that you are able to use Windows Update for getting updates applied.

Flash fixes

Microsoft May patches also involve a patch for a vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player. The company has released a number of security updates to fix 67 bugs in its Windows OS and software related to it. Adobe also released a new Flash Player update which addressed one but essential security flaw.

Office

The Master Patchlist of Susan Bradley reveals that the users are virtually ready to roll. However, the official workaround or how to fix articles for Microsoft Office on Office.com/setup involved several specific issues and just a handful of possible solutions on www.office.com/myaccount.
