Peer Networking Grouping Service on Local Computer

Microsoft has removed the Homegroup from Windows 10 v1803. But still, if you want to get this feature, then you can find this in the older Windows versions such as- Windows 8, Windows 7. If you are a Windows user that has Homegroup functionality but you are facing an error message like- “Windows could not start the Peer Networking Grouping service on Local Computer with error code 1068”. No need to get frustrated with this error, here we are providing some possible solutions. It will help you resolve this error from your Windows. The full error message will show something like this:
“Windows could not start the Peer Networking Grouping service on Local Computer.
The error code is 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start”.

1- Check the Services

You will get four services which are run to get the Homegroup working on Windows computer system correctly. The Peer name is:-
1- Resolution Protocol
2- Peer Networking Grouping
3- Peer Networking Identity Manager, and
4- PNRP Machine Name Publication Service.
  • To check that all are working correctly, launch the Services Manager on your Windows computer system.
  • If you a Windows 10 and Windows 7 user then you can take help from Start Menu.
  • Otherwise, you can press the Win + R and type services.MSC and click on the Enter button.
  • After that, check those services.
  • Double-click on each service, and make sure that the Service status is set to Running. Otherwise, select the Manual from Startup type drop-down menu.
  • Then click on the Start button accordingly.

2- Start the Homegroup Troubleshooter

  • If you are using the Windows 10 v1703 and v1709, you will get a Homegroup Troubleshooter.
  • To run that, open the Windows Settings panel > move to Update & Security > Troubleshoot option.
  • Scroll down a bit on your right-hand side, and there you will get a Homegroup option.
  • Click on the Homegroup option and then click on the Run the troubleshooter button. After that, you need to follow the 0n-screen option to get it done.

3- Rename and Change the Permission of MachineKeys

  • Launch the Windows Explorer and then enter this path in the address bar. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA
  • Here C is your computer system drive.
  • By using RSA folder, you can get other one subfolder which is called MachineKeys.
  • You need to rename this folder.
  • Rename this folder are per your comfort.
  • To do this, you need administrator permission.
  • After that, generate a subfolder in the RSA folder and name it as MachineKeys.
  • Now right-click on this folder and then navigate to Properties and switch to Security tab.
  • Choose the everyone and click on the Edit button.
  • Now make a tick in the Full control/Allow checkbox and then click on the Apply and OK button carefully.
  • At last, if you are not able to resolve this issue with the first solution on this list, then you need to open Services and make sure those four services are running correctly.

4- Check the Group Policy Editor

There is one more option in Group Policy Editor that will able you to turn on or off peer-to-peer networking service on your Windows computer system.
  • If this option is set on OFF mode, then you no need to use Homegroup on your computer system.
  • After that, open the Group Policy Editor, at first.
  • To do this, press the Win + R and type the gpedit.msc.
  • Then click on the Enter button. Accordingly, go to this path:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Microsoft Peer-to-Peer Networking Services
  • You will find an option that is Turn off Microsoft Peer-to-Peer Networking Services, on your right-hand side.
  • Double-click on this option and then select the either Not Configured or Disabled.
  • Do not select Enabled.
  • At last, you have to confirm that if your issue has been resolved or not.
