Solution for Windows 10 Upgrade Stuck at Blank Screen

Before proceeding for the solution, here will read about a brief description of the error. Two of them are given below.
While logging in to your account, you will see a blank screen with only a Recycle Bin and a taskbar.  There will be no start screen, and even closing Windows Explorer with Task Manager will not help you.
While upgrading, the OS will show you select your keyboard layout and will get stuck at that.
You can also find that their Update screen is stuck at the selected your keyboard layout screen.
Steps to follow for this error:-

1- Use Command Prompt to repair Windows Rollback:-

  • Select the US keyboard, and then go to the “Choose an option screen.”
  • The top left tile of the next screen which reads “Continue – Exit and continue to Windows Rollback.”
  • If you don’t get this, then move to the second method.
  • Now, select the Troubleshoot > Command Prompt. > Type bcdedit and press on the Enter key.
  • Here, you will see four displayed.
  • Ignore the first entry that is called bootmgr.
  • The next entries will have an attribute that is called “device” or “bootstatdevice,” which will have a value similar to partition=E: (example)
  • In the command box, switch to the drive letter you noted in the last step.
  • In this example, you will type E: and press Enter.
  • Please type the below command and then press the enter key:
  • copy \Windows.old\Windows\System32\OOBE\SetupPlatform\SetupPlatform.exe \$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources
  • Then you will get the output, “1 file(s) copied”.
  • Now exit the command prompt, and choose an options screen.
  • Then choose the Continue – Exit and continue to Windows Rollback.
  • This will initiate the Windows Rollback, and restore your system to the previous version of Windows. Once it completes, its best not to upgrade manually, and wait for a notification from the Windows Update to notify you about an upgrade.

2- Perform an in-place upgrade:-

For this, we will try to install as if you have other Windows 10 Installation on your PC. You need to rename the Windows from the previous folder to save your valuable data from being overwritten in specific scenarios.
The requirements for system restore:-
  • 8 GB blank USB drive.
  • One more Windows PC to create a bootable Windows 10 device.
Now please follow the below-given steps:-
  • First of all, you need to download the Media Creation Tool on any other PC.
  • You will find a bootable disk from your installation location.
  • you need to boot using USB device you just created by modifying the settings in your BIOS.
  • If you are trying to retrieve the previous installation, you need to stop the place where it asks to choose keyboard layout.
  • Now choose the US keyboard, and then at the Choose an options screen, select Troubleshoot > Command Prompt.
  • Now type the cmd.exe window and type C: and press the Enter key.
  • Just suppose C is the drive where your Windows was installed.
  • Then enter the following command Ren Windows.old Windows.old.bak, and press the Enter key.
  • Close the command prompt and you have to choose an options screen which we saw before.
  • Then use another operating system > Windows 10 on volume X, where “X” will be a number.
  • Wait for few seconds, and then it will load the desktop.
  • After that, you will get back on your usual desktop screen and click-start Window 10 installation manually.
  • It will be limited so, if the actual desktop doesn’t get loaded, you can use the Task Manager to open the Windows 10 Setup.exe.
  • Now, right-click on a blank area on your taskbar, select the Task Manager > More details > Select File and then start the new task.
  • Go the dialog box that appears and check the box for Create this task with administrator privileges.
  • Now, select the Browse, and then select the setup.exe file that is available in the USB drive.
  • After that, start the Windows 10 Upgraded.
  • Although, you have to make sure to uncheck the option to check for new updates
  • After completing this process, you will be able to retrieve all of your data from the Windows.old. Bak folder.
