How Can I Fix a 502 Bad Gateway Error?

The 502 Bad Gateway error is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) status code that is caused when a server on the internet receives an invalid or unacceptable response from another server. This error is often a network error between servers on the internet. Getting this error on the computer screen doesn’t mean that the problem is with your computer or internet connection. Hence, this is the fault of an error occurred between servers on the internet. These errors are often caused by the problems begotten between online servers that are out of your control.
Note: However, sometimes, there may not be the real issue, but your browser will think there is a one. Thus, the problem can be your web browser, an issue with your home networking tool or equipment, or some other in-your-control reason.

TYPES OF 502 BAD GATEWAY ERRORS

This error can come on almost any website. You may have seen website hosted on Cloudflare, Bad Gateway NGINX, Twitter Overcapacity error, and even when the Windows Update stopped working because of 502 error, it tends to show the WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_BAD_GATEWAY message.
Excepting the Bad Gateway error, there are types of errors you may also have seen:
  • Error 502
  • 502 Proxy Error
  • Temporary Error (502)
  • HTTP 502
  • 502 Server Error: This server can cause a temporary error and will not complete your request.
  • Bad Gateway: This proxy server tends to receive a wrong response from an upstream server.
Though, since we got to know that it is possible that there can be something wrong on your end too, here are some solutions to try fixing them:

RELOAD THE URL

To try setting this issue, you should reload the URL by pressing F5 or Ctrl-R on your keyboard. Or you can do it by tapping the refresh/reload button. While the 502 Bad Gateway error is typically showing a networking error outside of your control, it could be something extremely temporary. Reloading the page is often likely to be successful.

OPEN A NEW BROWSER SESSION

Try starting a new browser session. To do so, close all of the open browser windows and then launch a new one. Now you can try relaunching the webpage. Maybe the 502 error you received could be due to an issue on your PC that takes place sometime during this use of your browser. Thus, a normal restart of the browser program itself could fix the issue.

CLEAR YOUR BROWSER’S CACHE

If both of the mentioned-above solutions don’t work, you can clear your browser’s cache. Old or corrupted files that are being stored by your browser may be causing this 502 Bad Gateway issues on your device. Thus, if you remove those cached files and try to load the page again, this may fix the issue if this is the reason.

DELETE YOUR BROWSER’S COOKIES

Try deleting your browser’s cookies. For stated intentions as mentioned above with cached files, when you clear stored cookies, it could also troubleshoot the 502 error.

TRY THE SAFE MODE

Restart your browser in Safe Mode. If you run a browser in Safe Mode, it means you are running it with default settings and without add-ons or extensions, as well as toolbars. Being in Safe Mode, if you no longer find 502 error appearing, you should then understand that some of the browser extensions or settings are the main reason of the error. Go back to your browser settings. Then head to default, or you can selectively stop browser extensions in order to find the actual cause of the problem and fix it as well.

TRY ANOTHER BROWSER

At last, I would like to recommend that you should try another browser. Popular browsers include Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer, among others. If you don’t find an alternative browser producing a 502 Bad Gateway error, you should then understand that your original browser has been the source of the issue. Hopefully, if you’ve followed the above troubleshooting advice, then it should now be the time to reinstall your browser and check if that fixes the issue.
