In this post, some solutions are available to fix this slow data copy speed since we’ve tried to resolve this issue by providing guidelines for increasing copy-paste speed in Windows 10/8/7.

5 solutions to increase Slow files copy speed in Windows device

Solution #1 Change the USB Port

Modern computers have a lot of USB ports. So, if the USB drive you use supports USB 3.0/3.1, you need to make sure to plug it inside a USB 3.0/3.1 port. A USB 3 port is typically blue; also, you can go to your computer’s documentation to locate it. Changing ports would improve copy speeds significantly. Thus, according to the experts, it should be the first thing that you should try while trying to accelerate the entire copying or moving process.

Solution #2 Fix Errors with Hard Drive

It can also be a good idea to check your hard disk or external drive for errors by following the steps as given below:
  • First of all, you need to open This PC.
  • Right click on the desired external drive.
  • Tap on the Properties option.
  • After that, go to the Tools tab.
  • Here, tap on the Check button under Error Checking.
Now, following this solution will scan your drive for any errors and will also provide you with an option to resolve them. Proceed and fix all these errors and see if copy speed has improved or not. Move to the next solution if this one hasn’t worked for you.

Solution #3 Update USB Drivers

Slow copy speeds can be a result of faulty drivers. Since there are a variety of devices and many corresponding drivers available to your device, getting wrong drivers in place can be the reason behind this issue.

Well, the drivers can easily be updated by visiting your PC’s manufacturer website. Also, the drivers can be found under the support section, ensure that you download and install the latest USB drivers. Doing so would also resolve some other inconsequential problems that you might be facing while using USB drives on your PC.

  • Firstly, take a backup of your data on the drive.
  • Then right click and select Format from the menu.
  • Now, you just need to select NTFS as the file format and disable the Quick Format.
Check if this solution works for you. Otherwise, move to the next one.

Solution #5 Disable Windows Auto Tuning

Auto-Tuning feature in Window is often believed to develop the performance for programs that receive TCP data over a network by adjusting the receive buffer size with dynamical in order to the throughput and latency of the link. So, when you are copying some data over the network, the auto-tuning feature is too running here. And in several cases, entirely disabling the Windows Auto-Tuning feature has been proven to increase copy speeds over the network.

Note: If disabling Auto Tuning doesn’t help, don’t forget to switch it back to normal mode.
